My Life With Music

Chris was enveloped in music at an early age by his father, Edwin "Whitey" Pawola, co-founder of the renowned polka band, "Whitey Pawola and the Naturals"- a Chicagoland favorite.

Chris began playing the guitar and piano at the age of six. By the time he was 15, he had begun teaching students and developing his individualized approach to instruction. He did not have a drivers license and remembers his parents having to drive him to the music store to work

Chris has a genuine love for "the greatest generation" and brings joy, laughter, and happiness with each event. For 15 years, he has served the assisted living and memory care communities creating meaningful and engaging performances and sing-alongs. With every song that is sung, hymn that is prayed, and every note played, Chris has the unique ability to unlock the memories of all. Chris' energy is infectious. He is kind and focused. He makes each person he interacts with feel special.

Chris brings the same dedication to music education. In the early years, he designed and developed a comprehensive K-8 music curriculum. For 17 years, he trained those students in general music skills as well as giving group lessons in both keyboard and guitar. In 40 years, Chris has trained thousands of students of all ages, abilities, and learning styles in the arts of: guitar, piano, bass, ukulele, percussion, and college-level theory.
Chris has collaborated with diverse groups on recording, engineering, and production services for over 150 CD and other media productions. Many of these projects included his own accompaniments in guitar, piano, and percussion.
He is genuine, creative, dedicated, faithful, a master performer, professional, and memorable. Chris is one of a kind. If you asked him, he would say that his passion is the creation of music and the creation of musicians. If you asked anyone who has experienced his spirit, they would add that his passion is woven in love.

Christian Pawola received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Northern Illinois University with an emphasis in jazz and classical guitar and piano pedagogy. He credits Deb Greiner, his first-time memory care director, mentor, and friend for his success in working with residents with Alzheimer's and other related dementias.

TESTIMONIALS

"Chris has given music lessons to my three children and me for years. He is professional and enthusiastic about music. All of us have learned about music in an enjoyable way. Chris has a deep talent for music, but more importantly, he cares deeply about his students and cultivates their love of music.” Brian Corr, Phd Horticulturist

“After my first guitar lesson with Chris, I felt very encouraged and decided to keep coming back to see him. My goal was to learn guitar theory in order to get out of a rut of mindless noodling. Since starting with Chris just a few months ago, I’m surprised at how quickly I’ve progressed. I thought it would be much more difficult, but Chris is a fantastic teacher. He is patient yet also pushes you to really study the lesson materials. I look forward to each session with Chris and definitely recommend him to folks who want to get a grip on music theory for guitar.” Josh Wade, Software Engineer

“I have taken lessons with Chris for a year. I have found him to be an extremely skilled musician, but he is still very encouraging for a beginner and has endless patience. I don’t think I could have stayed with it for the long haul without his help and cheerleading! I love to hear him play for those few minutes at the end of the lesson. It is so inspiring. He is an amazing musician and a great human being.” Pamela Walden, Psychologist & Care-Giver

"Chris' talents when working with elderly Alzheimer's patients is nothing short of miraculous. His musical talent, both playing the guitar and piano, as well as singing, make his programs a site of laughter, participation, and fond memories. It is amazing to observe residents who spend much of the day withdrawn from interaction suddenly come alive: hands clapping, sitting upright, laughing, and interacting with each other. Chris plays a perfect selection of songs: old stand-by-hymns, songs from another era, as well as some quirky modern songs that have become favorites. Each song resonates with so many of those present. Music touches the hearts and memories of those residents in ways that nothing else can. It is a gift." Brian Gustafson, Son of Louise
